French wine enthusiasts will already be aware of the Var vineyards, situated in the South of France, but may be surprised to learn of the many opportunities to visit them. While holidaying on the French Riviera, it is worth taking the time to explore this beautiful, forested region. Maybe even bring back a selection of delicious bottles from the wineries to enjoy with some local gastronomic specialities. The ideal place to start is the picturesque town of Les-Arcs-sur-Argens, home to the Chateau Sainte Roseline vineyard. This prestigious site is one of the most visited in Provence and was created by Pope Jean XXI. The historic Chateau has a tasting room on site, and cellar tours are offered, to discover the award-winning Cote de Provence Rose wine. Fayence is not to be missed, and is known as a "perched village." This pleasant spot is ideal as a holiday base, being close to other pretty towns, historic sites and welcoming vineyards. A visit to the Chateau des Selves should be next on the agenda, famed not only for its wine but also its delicious olive oils. Their red wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot grapes, grown in their extensive vineyards. Wine tasting is available on request with prior notification. Also located on the Canton de Fayence plain, is the idyllic vineyard of Domaine Grande Bastide. Wines, which include a Muscat Rose Millesime and a Cuvee Premiere Blanc, are among many that have won numerous awards. Not only can the wines be tried here in a tasting room that seats 25, but visitors can also participate in the harvesting of the grapes, before indulging in a country style lunch.

Venturing further into the Var, the countryside is studded with rows of vines, indicating the presence of even more vineyards, happy to welcome visitors. Some suggestions include Chateau de Berne, Chateau de Saint Martin and Chateau Minuty. The Canton de Fayence is the ideal region in which to enjoy wine tasting and tours.
